As we move into our month of outreach, which we’re calling ‘New Member September’, it’s worth recognising that one of the reasons we may not be excited by evangelism is because we’re not excited enough by Jesus. A simple fact of human nature is that when we come across something truly amazing, like an entertaining movie or stage-show, a new smart phone, or a good report card from school, we want to share it with those around us, so they too can share in our joy.
When it comes to the Kingdom of God, Christians have something infinitely more valuable than anything else on the planet. In Matthew 13:44 Jesus says:
“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.
For the man to sell EVERYTHING he had, with JOY, shows just how valuable the kingdom is. Sadly most Christians are lacking this joy. So what do we do? Well there are 3 steps towards enjoying God SO MUCH, that we will WANT to share our joy with others:
Step 1: Realise what we have in Jesus is infinitely more valuable than any other ‘treasure’ we may be tempted to chase in this life.
Step 2: Look to Jesus each day, to try and find something new and amazing about him. This is what heaven will be like; having a new wonder revealed to us every day about how incredible God is.
Step 3: Call upon the Spirit to empower us, so we can EXPERIENCE just how valuable Jesus is. Without the Spirit’s help, we will keep chasing the wind.
Only when we start to truly realise the value of what we have in Jesus will our excitement overflow into telling the world about him.
