As our church Vision Statement says, we exist to bring glory to God by calling all to enjoy Him as their ultimate treasure.  Since God is a person, the way we enjoy Him is through relating to Him.  We enjoy objects by using them for our personal enjoyment.  We enjoy people by relating to them.  And one of the core ways God has ordained for us to relate to him is through His word.

The main way we enjoy God through his word is by unlocking the most amazing secrets of the universe; namely who God is and how he works.  God chose the written word, a form of communication humans can understand, to reveal to us the most amazing being in existence.  The more we learn about God, the more our wonder and amazement of Him grows.

God’s word also reveals to us how the world works.  As the creator of the universe, God put together an instruction manual of how to use it.  This is why the Psalmist says God’s word makes us wiser than our enemies (Ps 119:98).  God’s enemies either try to figure out life themselves, or are duped by the Evil One.  God’s people on the other hand enjoy the enormous privilege of inside knowledge of how life works best.

Furthermore, God’s word reveals his very great promises to his people, which are still in effect today (Ps 119:164).  It grants the believer a hope that others can only dream of.  Is it any wonder then that the Psalmist has such a deep longing for God’s word, and sees it as a hidden treasure (Ps 119:162)

May we echo the psalmist when he prays ‘open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law’ (Psalm 119:18), and continue to grow in our love and amazement of God as we open his word each and every day.
