Each year on ‘Vision Sunday’ we discuss an aspect of our life together that we’d like to focus on for the coming year.  Previous years have included topics such as (i) Enjoying God, (ii) Enjoying Sunday worship, (iii) Discipleship, (iv) Evangelism and (v) revival, all of which have produced real fruit in the life of our church.

With most of 2021 expected to be under COVID restrictions, we are limited in what we will be able to do as a church.  Putting on large outreach events could be seen as irresponsible, and guest services are difficult due to restricted numbers.  So what should we focus on in 2021?

Well, complicated times call for simple measures.  So last Sunday, for Vision Sunday 2021, we looked at perhaps the most basic, but at the same time most important topic in all of the Bible, save for the gospel itself.  And that is, building the deepest and most intimate relationship with God we can.  As Paul says in Philippians 3, anything else is considered rubbish compared to a relationship with Jesus.

Speaking personally, God has blessed me twice in life with a deepening of my relationship with him; once at age 20 and once at age 40.  These leaps in Christian maturity resulted in a much more meaningful and enjoyable life, for which I am eternally thankful to God.  The reason I keep preaching on building a deeper relationship with God is because I would really love you to enjoy the enormous benefits of a deepening relationship with God, just as I have.

So let’s get back to basics in 2021, and dedicate ourselves to (i) understanding that a deeper relationship with God means a more satisfying life, (ii) pray that God will grant us a desire for such a relationship, and (iii) set aside time to build said relationship.
